LONG BEACH : Man Shot by Police Gets $4-Million Settlement
- Share via
A Long Beach resident who was mistakenly shot by a police officer will be paid $4 million in the largest excessive-force settlement in the city’s history, officials said Monday.
Vanmalibhai Galal, 65, was shot in the abdomen Jan. 19, 1988, after Officer Gregory Allison confused the elderly landlord with a suspect he was chasing. Last summer, a Los Angeles Superior Court jury awarded Galal and his wife, Valiben, $6.75 million. At the time, city officials said they planned to file a request for a new trial, but they missed the deadline.
Assistant City Atty. Robert E. Shannon said Long Beach agreed to settle the case to avoid the risk of losing a larger amount during an appeal.
