Santa Margarita Camp, Where ‘Anything Goes’

The summer theatrical camp at Santa Margarita High School will culminate with open-air performances of “Anything Goes,” a two-act musical Aug. 4 through 7 at Talon Theatre, 22062 Antonio Parkway, Rancho Santa Margarita.

Under the direction of Jeff Nowlin, theater arts instructor, the 1940s hit musical will feature a cast of 30 students, all of whom participated in the annual summer camp for aspiring actors and actresses.

The theater camp, in its third year, is open to all county residents from the fifth through 12th grades. The sessions, which run Tuesdays through Thursdays, cost $175 and include social events such as beach trips.

The summerlong camp and theatrical productions “help build self-esteem in the theater; everyone gets a part,” said parent Sandi Pauli.

In “Anything Goes,” Michelle LaVoie and Jennifer Binsfield will alternate in the lead role of Reno Sweeney, a nightclub singer. Grant Arnow will star as Billy.

Bonanza Bingo, Good Neighbor games and Birthday Specials are among the upcoming theme bingo games being held this summer as fund-raisers for Tustin and Foothill high schools.

The Sunday games, benefiting academic, athletic and other activities, offer cash prizes of $250. Doors open at 3:30 p.m., and games begin at 4:30 and 5:15 p.m. at the Tustin High School cafeteria, 1171 El Camino Real. The ongoing games, now in their third year, will run through the fall.

Between 270 and 325 players attend the games each week, said Brad Lantz, director of student services for the Tustin Unified School District. The initial buy-in is $20, and each additional bingo sheet is $5.

Sponsored by Boosters Organizations of Tustin High Schools (BOOTH), the bingo games help support Foothill High’s Grad Night, Parent-Teacher Organization, leadership group, pep squad, band and sports teams.

Tustin High beneficiaries include the Parent-Teacher Organization, student government, Academic Boosters and Pep Boosters, Model United Nations, drama groups and a variety of sports teams.
