‘Moe’ Knows How to Have Fun

The Scene: Thursday night’s opening of the musical revue “Five Guys Named Moe.” The show, based on the music of songwriter Louis Jordan, will run through Sept. 25 at the Doolittle Theatre in Hollywood before going on a North American tour. After the opening, guests gathered in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel for a party. Producer/impresario Cameron Mackintosh flew from London for the premiere.

Who Was There: Director/choreographer Charles Augins; cast members Kevyn Brackett, Doug Eskew, Milton Craig Nealy, Jeffrey Polk, Kirk Taylor and Keith Tyrone; guests Jason Alexander, Gordon and Judi Davidson, Ron Glass, Michael Gross, Valerie Harper, David Hasselhoff, Garrett Morris, Alan Parker, Joyce Van Patten, Arnetia Walker and Betty White.

Dress Code: Nothing cohesive. Mackintosh wore a California casual green shirt and slacks. Best-dressed laurels had to go to those guests who came in kente cloth and African-inspired clothes.

Fashion Statement: It was hard to miss “Baywatch” star David Hasselhoff in his bright purple double-breasted suit and black tux shoes.

Chow: Roast beef, turkey, ice cream, fresh fruit and curly fries served up in silver salvers. Public Access TV restaurant critic Karen Salkin’s review: “This is the best food I’ve ever had in this room, but I chipped my nail on the roast beef.”

Trend Watch: Angelenos must love their fanny packs. Several men, apparently unwilling to strap on these marsupial appendages over their suits, carried them like purses.

L.A. Moment: An exchange between two men at the buffet: “Is he back from vacation yet?” “He was in rehab, man.” “I know, but I was trying to be nice.”

Overheard: Said of a woman wearing a transparent top with a black brassiere underneath: “Sister, that dress is headed for trouble, and it’s taking you with it.”

Triumphs: The participatory spirit of the show (which includes an audience sing-along and conga line) carried through to the party. Judging from the number of people who were still there after midnight, they must have been having fun.

Glitches: Shortages of tables, cutlery and oxygen. Try eating a piece of roast beef with a fork while standing up.
