Prosecutors filed attempted robbery and other charges Monday against two suspects arrested for trying to rob a Brinks armored car guard at the Antelope Valley Mall, and court documents revealed that the crime probably was gang-related and involved two other possible suspects.

In Lancaster, Alonzo M. Bright, 29, of Inglewood--who had several prior felony convictions and was on parole--was charged with four felony counts stemming from the incident. He and an accomplice were shot and wounded by the Brinks guard Thursday afternoon to foil the robbery.

Bright, who underwent surgery at a Palmdale hospital after suffering the more serious gunshot wound, remained in custody Monday in lieu of $60,000 bail. He was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, attempted robbery, commercial burglary and being a felon in possession of a gun.

In Sylmar, meanwhile, juvenile prosecutors filed a two-count petition against his alleged accomplice, a 17-year-old Inglewood youth who was not identified because of his age. Prosecutors also filed a motion asking a juvenile judge to order the youth to be tried as an adult.

The 17-year-old, who remained in custody after being released from a Palmdale hospital, is due to be arraigned today on the attempted robbery and burglary allegations. A hearing date probably will be set on the motion to have the youth tried as an adult, prosecutors said.

According to a Sheriff’s Department report filed with Bright’s case, the youth told deputies that Bright had talked with two other men in a red Porsche outside the mall just before the attempted robbery. The youth identified the two men, who have not been arrested, as members of two Crips factions in Los Angeles.

Sheriff’s Detective Clarence Stewart, the investigator on the case, said there are indications the latest mall incident and two prior robberies in recent weeks are all the work of Los Angeles-based gang members. The juvenile in the latest incident admitted being a gang member, Stewart said.

Other witnesses had said they spotted the red Porsche leaving the mall area about the same time as Bright and the juvenile, but the juvenile’s statement was the first public information linking them to the crime. Stewart said he also believed others were involved in planning the latest crime.
