NORTHRIDGE : Official to Grant Vons Liquor Permit

Share

A city zoning official has said he will approve a liquor permit requested by the Vons Companies Inc. for an upscale market proposed for 19500 Plummer St. in Northridge.

The proposed Pavilions Place supermarket is one of as many as 50 stores that may occupy the proposed Northridge Pavilion shopping center, a 246,366-square-foot commercial development that has been in the works for several years.

Two years ago a zone change for the shopping center was approved despite heavy neighborhood opposition. But at Monday’s hearing, only one neighborhood activist, Walter Prince of the North San Fernando Valley-based group PRIDE, suggested changes.

Prince asked that lighting be directed away from neighbors, a condition already drafted into environmental plans for the site, said City Assistant Zoning Administrator Albert Landini.

Landini said initial opposition to the shopping center, which helped kill a proposal for a movie theater that was part of the original plan, seems to have evaporated.

As a condition of approval, Landini asked that the developer landscape the top of a two-story parking garage attached to the proposed L-shaped two-story shopping center.

Vons officials have said they expect the store to open in 1995. The shopping center will replace a hardware store, which closed several years ago.
