SOUTH LOS ANGELES : After 9 Years, Supermarket Gets Preliminary Approval
After nearly nine years of delays, the Los Angeles City Council this week gave preliminary approval to a proposal by Food 4 Less Supermarkets Inc. and Bakewell Development to build a supermarket at Adams Boulevard and Vermont Avenue in South Los Angeles.
The council gave the supermarket chain and Danny Bakewell, president of the Brotherhood Crusade community group, three months to negotiate a deal to build the market.
Bakewell’s private development firm was brought in to make sure that minorities participate in the project, said Margaret Diop, planning deputy for Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas. The supermarket chain has proposed building an Alpha Beta market on land owned by the chain and the Community Redevelopment Agency.
