ANAHEIM — The Mighty Ducks, with the opening of training camp a little more than a month away, added free agents Myles O’Connor and Shaun Van Allen to their roster Thursday and confirmed the signing of Peter Douris.
O’Connor, 26, a defenseman, played in seven games with New Jersey last winter. He joined the Devils in 1989 and played parts of the last four seasons with Utica, New Jersey’s American Hockey League affiliate.
“He’s an offensive-type player,” said Jack Ferreira, Ducks general manager. “He could play the point on the power play, be the quarterback of the power play. He’s got very good quickness. When you’re an expansion team and the puck is in your end a lot, you need quick guys who can get by people.”
Van Allen, 25, has spent the last five seasons in the Edmonton organization, playing most of the time with the team’s AHL affiliate in Cape Breton. He appeared in a career-high 21 games with Edmonton last season, scoring one goal and adding four assists.
“Shaun is a very creative type of center,” Ferreira said. “He’s a very good playmaker. He’s got good scoring touch and good size. He’s not exceptionally quick.”
Douris, a 27-year-old left wing who played in 19 games with Boston last season, signed a three-year deal, according to sources, with annual salaries of $325,000, $350,000 and $350,000. Bruin General Manager Harry Sinden was critical of those figures, according to a story in The Sporting News.
Although the Ducks wouldn’t confirm the numbers, Assistant General Manager Pierre Gauthier defended Douris’ contract.
“He’s getting a fair contract,” Gauthier said. “I know there have been comments that it’s high, but that’s OK. For what he’s going to do on our club, he’s well worth it.
“That’s still under the average salary in the league--if those numbers are correct.”
The three additions puts the Ducks’ roster at 37. Training camp opens in early September.
