LOS ANGELES : School Board Backs Charter Status for 2 More Campuses

Share

The Los Angeles Board of Education gave the go-ahead Monday to two more campuses hoping to achieve autonomy from the mammoth school district.

The board unanimously approved charter applications from Westwood Elementary School and Fenton Avenue Elementary School in Lake View Terrace. The State Board of Education must give final approval--expected in September--which will enable the schools to pursue their own educational goals and virtually run themselves.

Monday’s action brings the number of charter campuses in the Los Angeles system to nine, one shy of the limit imposed on school districts by state law.

The school board also formally received a charter petition from 99th Street Elementary School in South-Central Los Angeles and has 60 days to approve or reject it.

The Charter Schools Act of 1992 allows up to 100 schools in California to be exempted from the voluminous state Education Code--an experiment designed to allow teachers to come up with the best ways to improve student achievement.
