SAN CLEMENTE : Convicts Will Be Charged for Jail Fee
- Share via
People convicted of any criminal offense after being arrested in the community will be charged for their $158 jail booking fee under a new ordinance adopted last week by the City Council.
Council members unanimously approved the ordinance, saying they hope it will allow the city to recover much of its jail booking fee costs, which total about $100,000 annually.
Since 1991, the county has been charging all cities a booking fee for the cost of processing prisoners into the jail system.
About 630 people per year are arrested in San Clemente.
With the ordinance, San Clemente becomes one of the first cities in South County to recover the costs of booking fees from those who are arrested and convicted.
