Two men escaped serious injury when their training helicopter crashed and was demolished at Venice Beach on Tuesday evening, county lifeguards said.

An instructor and his student were on a training flight only a few hundred feet above the sand when the Robinson R-22 helicopter suddenly plunged to the beach.

Lifeguard Jay Butky was at his beachfront post when he saw the crash “and to my amazement I saw these two people climbing out of the wreckage.” One man suffered minor cuts.

There was no immediate identification of the two men and Federal Aviation Administration officials were seeking the cause of the crash landing.

“I was expecting fatalities for sure. I just plain couldn’t understand anyone walking out of it,” Butky said.
