The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday unanimously passed a motion that transferred $32,000 in city costs for this year’s Van Nuys Airport Aviation Expo from the city’s strained coffers to the financially independent Department of Airports.

“I’m very pleased,” said Councilman Joel Wachs, who introduced the motion to declare the expo a special event. The expo is held Aug. 21 and 22. “We’re going to have an exciting show and we’re not going to have a burden on the city treasury.”

More than 250,000 aviation enthusiasts are expected to attend this year’s expo, which features a variety of vintage, military and commercial aircraft.

The motion allowed the Department of Airports to pay the $32,000 price tag, which includes police overtime, three fire inspectors and 13 daily parking officers. These expenses were paid in the past by the fire, transportation, and other city departments.
