Transamerica Earnings More than Double: Noting that its life insurance operations performed exceptionally well, San Francisco-based Transamerica Corp. said its second-quarter earnings came to $123.9 million, or $1.49 per share, compared to $60.3 million, or 69 cents a share, a year earlier. Year-ago earnings were reduced by a loss at the firm’s property and casualty insurance business, which it sold earlier this year. Excluding the property and casualty results, income from continuing operations grew 27% in the second quarter from a year-ago level of $97.5 million, or $1.17 a share. Revenue in the quarter grew 8% to $1.3 billion.
