VAN NUYS : Activist Vows Welfare Will Be Priority
A Van Nuys activist has been reappointed to the Los Angeles County Commission on Public Social Services, vowing Thursday to preserve the county’s welfare services in the San Fernando Valley.
Jerry Freedman Habush said his reappointment Tuesday as one of 15 commissioners by County Supervisor Ed Edelman will allow him to continue his battle to maintain services at the Valley’s welfare offices in Canoga Park, Panorama City and Sylmar.
“The Department of Public Social Services is suffering serious cutbacks,” said Habush, 50, a public affairs consultant. “That’s going to increase the long lines and frustration level at every service center. I do intend to try to push for preservation more in the Valley of DPSS offices.”
The offices provide Aid to Families with Dependent Children, general relief, food stamps, MediCal and other services. The commission, which Habush has served on since 1989, holds public hearings, oversees department operations, advises the Board of Supervisors on social services issues and reviews proposed legislation.
