The Orange County Vanguards lost to the Express, a professional soccer team in Uganda, 3-1, in front of 2,000 spectators Wednesday in Kampala, Uganda.

The Vanguards, playing at an altitude 5,000 feet a day after their 24-hour trip from Los Angeles, took a 1-0 lead two minutes into the second half on a goal by Bill Furlong. John Baugus and Greg Olson assisted.

The Express tied the score in the 47th minute and then took the lead 10 minutes later. They added an insurance goal in the 75th minute.

Julie Tippett has been named assistant athletic trainer at UC Irvine. She replaces Loreen Kosji, who resigned to return to school.

Tippett, a graduate of Illinois, was an athletic trainer at a sports medicine clinic in Green Bay, Wis., from 1990-92. Her husband, Howard, is an assistant coach with the Rams.

Alicia Allison shot 74 in the final round of the Betsy Rawls Championship in Wilmington, Del., to finish at 239, 19 shots behind winner Grace Park of Phoenix. Allison, of Santa Ana, was the defending champion.
