A 52-year-old Thousand Oaks man apparently committed suicide Friday evening by jumping in front of a Southern Pacific Railroad train traveling about 40-50 m.p.h. through Simi Valley, authorities said.

Police did not release the identity of the man, who witnesses said hid behind a sign at the intersection of Los Angeles Avenue and Erringer Road before jumping in front of the eastbound train at about 5 p.m., said Sgt. Joe Loniero.

“According to witnesses and passersby at the time, he waited there and as soon as the train came. . .he stood right in front of the train,” Loniero said.

The incident closed Erringer Road in both directions, backing up traffic for about two hours, police said. The train tracks also were closed, delaying five Metrolink commuter trains, Lt. Tony Harper said.
