Ducks Sign Defenseman From Western Michigan

Scott Chartier, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound defenseman, has become the 38th player signed by the Mighty Ducks, the NHL expansion team announced Friday.

Chartier, 21, played for Western Michigan last season, collecting 28 points on six goals and 22 assists. He was named to the all-rookie team of the Central Collegiate Hockey Assn.

During the 1991-92 season, Chartier played for the Kelowna Spartans of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League, scoring 46 points on 13 goals, 33 assists. He also was an all-star and team captain with the Notre Dame Hounds of the Saskatchewan junior league.

“We’re very excited about adding Scott Chartier to our roster,” Mighty Duck General Manager Jack Ferreira said in a prepared statement. “He has the talent and potential to be part of the Mighty Ducks for many years to come with his abilities on both the offensive and defensive ends of the ice.”

Scott Strosnider said he has resigned as football coach at Santa Ana Valley High School.

Strosnider has accepted a high school teaching position in Riverside county.

He was 3-16-1 during his two seasons at Santa Ana Valley. The Falcons were 3-6-1 and 1-3-1 in the Century League in 1992.

Sharon Campbell was named women’s basketball coach at Concordia University, the school announced. Campbell, a former coach at Eastern Oregon State and Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Tex., has a career record of 117-124. She replaces Kent Schlichtemeier, who resigned in May.

The Orange County Sports Assn., organizer of the Freedom Bowl, announced its sponsorship of a collegiate tennis tournament in Fullerton.

The 21st Freedom Bowl Intercollegiate Tennis Classic will be held Dec. 26-30 at the Sunny Hills Racquet Club. About 150 to 200 players are expected to compete.

The Orange County Vanguards soccer team tied Villa of Uganda, 0-0, Thursday in front of 1,900 fans at Uganda’s national soccer stadium.

Villa, the 10-time defending Ugandan champion, is considered the top club in East Africa.
