EAST LOS ANGELES : Rape Hot Line Seeks Bilingual Volunteers

Bilingual volunteers are needed to answer emergency calls from victims seeking help from the East Los Angeles Rape and Battering Hotline.
The hot line, founded in 1974 by Chicana social workers, has scheduled training sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. from Sept. 13 to Nov. 3.
The calls, as many as 60 a month, come from women who have recently been raped, sexually assaulted or sexually harassed, said project director Alva Moreno. Other calls come from women who remember abuse from their childhood and only now are able to deal with their feelings, or from young women who cannot bond with a child born out of rape.
“Violence against women unfortunately keeps rising and does not stop,” Moreno said.
The nonprofit service receives calls from throughout Los Angeles County, said volunteer Carol Marron. Many times, other rape crisis hot lines refer women to the East Los Angeles hot line because they do not have volunteers who speak Spanish, she said.
“I’ve been with it six years and I’m still here,” Marron said. “There’s just the need to be here for them and knowing that you’ve seen them through the trauma” is gratifying.
