SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Club Joins City in Promoting Recycling

Share

Members of the Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley will join forces with San Juan Capistrano officials to promote recycling in a way that saves the city money but raises funds for club activities.

Starting today, club members will go door to door, handing out refrigerator magnets that remind homeowners to continue their recycling efforts.

By distributing the magnets in person, the city will save about $780 in mailing costs, while the club will earn $700 for its work, according to Liz Elliott with the Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley.

“It helps us and it also helps them,” she said.

San Juan Capistrano Mayor Gil Jones added: “The best benefit comes from involving these young people in community recycling, in helping to pay for their club’s operations, and in working to save money for the city where they live.”

The cities of Dana Point, Laguna Niguel and San Juan Capistrano recently created the magnets to bolster recycling. The magnets also remind residents what items can be placed in their blue recycling bins.

Since opening earlier this year, about 50 youths have joined the club on El Camino Real.

After raising about $50,000 in a recent fund-raiser, the club expanded its hours this summer from 2 to 6 p.m. and increased its number of days open to Mondays through Fridays.

The Community Services Department continues to administer the club and provide financial assistance.
