A top German NATO official and his British wife have been arrested on suspicion of passing many of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s most closely guarded military secrets to the former East Germany over a period of 10 years, German authorities said Sunday.

The federal prosecutor’s office declined to give the surname of the arrested couple, identifying them only as Rainer R, 47, and Christine-Ann R.

The couple, who live in Brussels, were detained during a visit to Germany.

Clues were found when files held by Topaz controllers in the former East Germany’s Ministry for State Security (Stasi) passed into Western hands.
