Second baseman Damion Easley was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday and will begin an exploratory internal examination today at Anaheim Memorial Hospital.

The Angels signed Kurt Stillwell, who cleared waivers Friday after his release from the San Diego Padres earlier this week, to fill the void.

Easley has been suffering from chronic pain in his lower legs since February. Lewis Yocum, the team orthopedic physician, has been unable to diagnose the condition.

“They want to see if I’m lacking anything--calcium, iron, zinc,” Easley said. “I’m not worried, I just want answers.”

Stillwell, a former All-Star shortstop who lost his job as the Padres’ starting shortstop, said he is happy to leave glad to be out of San Diego.

“It is a relief to be out of a situation like that,” said Stillwell, who batted .215.

To make room for Stillwell, the Angels designated pitcher Victor Silverio for assignment.

Bob Gibson, pitching in the Heroes of Baseball game before the Angels faced Minnesota, was struck on the right side of his head by a line drive off the bat of Ellis Valentine.

Gibson was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Orange for X-rays, which were negative.
