Seek Diversity in Local Development

One of the biggest arguments for the Wal-Mart development in Simi Valley is the increase in jobs--economic development if you will. Certainly, sales and business taxes will benefit the city. Job creation is a plus, however, only for a handful of unskilled positions.

Protecting the hillside is a highly visible reason for keeping the Wal-Mart from building in lieu of the proposed regional mall. This dilemma will now make it to the November ballot.

Little discussed, yet a very big point, is the type of business that is permitted to build on that spot. We have Target, K mart, and a Sears outlet. But people who live in this valley who want to shop in a department store must travel over the hill or to Thousand Oaks. Simi Valleyites like and need nice things also.

Simi Valley, like any other community, needs diversification. Other types of retail stores might draw more local business. This could also provide something to do for teen-agers who live here, rather than snorting coke or engaging in target practice while driving.
