El Monte : Trailer Park Power Restored

Share

City officials restored electrical service last week to 50 residents of the Silver Moon Trailer Park who were left in the dark for about three weeks because of an unpaid bill. Officials are working to turn on gas service.

Southern California Edison and Southern California Gas Co. shut off power and gas service at the park because the owners stopped paying the utility bills. SCE turned power back on July 28 after the city promised to pay for service if the owners didn’t.

Roger Wang, one of six partners who own the Garvey Avenue property, said they were unable to pay the bills because their tenants stopped paying rent. The tenants said they did not pay rent because renovation of the park was taking too long and had disrupted electric and gas service.

Terri Gonzales, a district manager at SCE, said the trailer park owners owe about $4,600, including about $1,000 in damage caused by tenants who tried to rig the meter to restore power.

The trailer park also owes more than $3,000 to the gas company, according to district manager Maggie Zelada. City Atty. Dave Gondek said he is negotiating with the company to restore gas service as soon as possible.

Park residents have agreed to pay rent for August, and Wang said he expects to pay the utility bills in the next few weeks.
