A summary of selected Los Angeles City Hall decisions affecting the Westside in the last week.

CITY COUNCIL

LAWYERS: Approved a proposal by Councilwoman Ruth Galanter to spend $250,000 to hire two private law firms to help the city fight a lawsuit filed by U.S. and foreign airlines to prevent the Department of Airports from collecting increased airport landing fees. The Los Angeles firms of Morrison & Foerster and Wilson & Becks were retained.

REWARD: Approved a reward offer of $25,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons who shot and killed Hasashi Nakajima, a Japanese businessman, on June 22 as he got out of his car near Greenlawn Avenue and Sepulveda Boulevard in the Mar Vista area.

NO DANCING: Denied an appeal by owners of a nightclub at 4812 W. Adams Blvd. in the West Adams-Leimert Park area and upheld certain conditions imposed by the city zoning administrator. They include restrictions on the hours of operation, a ban on dancing, and the hiring of security guards. Residents had complained about patrons making noise and causing disturbances and traffic congestion. The facility had been transformed from a restaurant without the proper city permits, officials said.

BACK YARD VOLLEYBALL: Approved the temporary closure of the 900 block of Harding Avenue in Venice from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sept. 18 for the annual Venice Backyard Volleyball Championships. Approximately 500 people are expected to participate.

BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS

WALK OF FAME: Approved adding the name of actress Annette Funicello to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A ceremony is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 14 at 6843 Hollywood Blvd. Funicello was one of the original Mouseketeers on the Mickey Mouse Club television show.

HOW THEY VOTED

How Westside City Council representatives voted on selected issues.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT: Approved a proposal to establish procedures for investigating sexual harassment and other personnel issues involving the staff of elected officials who are not hired through the civil service process. The office of the Chief Legislative Analyst, the Personnel Department and the Commission of the Status of Women will prepare the policies, which are to be reviewed within 60 days by the council. PASSED: 12-0.

VOTING YES: Marvin Braude, John Ferraro, Ruth Galanter, Jackie Goldberg and Nate Holden.

ABSENT: Mark Ridley-Thomas and Zev Yaroslavsky.

BAPTIST CONVENTION: Approved contributing $35,000 to the annual Progressive National Bapist Convention, which is meeting this week at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Of the funds, $27,000 will be used to help pay the rent for the convention hall and other costs, and $8,000 will go to support the organization’s community outreach and youth development programs. Ridley-Thomas, who made the proposal, said the 2,500 conventioneers will pump millions of dollars into the local economy. PASSED: 11-0.

VOTING YES: Braude, Ferraro, Galanter, Goldberg, Holden and Ridley-Thomas.

ABSENT: Zev Yaroslavsky.
