SIMI VALLEY : Cooler, Cleaner Air Due for Weekend

Share

Hot and smoggy conditions that kept some east Ventura County residents indoors Thursday will give way to cooler weather and cleaner skies for the weekend, weather officials said.

A low-pressure system is expected to sweep through the area today, displacing the warm, stagnant air that a high-pressure ridge had kept in place, said meteorologist Kent Field of the Air Pollution Control District.

As a result, ozone readings that peaked at unhealthful levels briefly Thursday will decline through the weekend, he said.

Temperatures will also drop as onshore breezes pick up and low clouds increase, Field said.

Moderate ozone readings were recorded Thursday in interior portions of the county, with the highest levels registered in Simi Valley, Ojai, Thousand Oaks and Santa Paula. Ozone readings rose briefly over the unhealthful level in Simi Valley, but declined quickly, Field said.

At the Simi Valley Boys & Girls Club, hot weather prompted recreational supervisors to reduce outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., said club director Paula Mackelburg.

“We’ve trained our staff how to treat heat exhaustion and heatstroke, but we had no problems today,” she said.

Daytime temperatures today are expected to range from about 70 along the coast to the high 80s inland.
