Robbers dressed as women nurses shot and wounded an armored car guard in the Fairfax district before escaping with a bagful of money Thursday afternoon, police said.

The suspects were “either two females or two men with wigs on,” said Bruce Cardenas, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department. Police declined to say how much money was taken.

The 28-year-old guard, whose identity was not revealed, was in stable condition at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Police said he suffered gunshot wounds in an arm and leg.

Lt. Ken Lady of the LAPD’s robbery-homicide division said the armored car was driven up to a Great Western Bank branch at 310 N. Fairfax Ave. about 2:15 p.m. for a delivery.

“As the guard approached the front door, one of the suspects, dressed in a nurse’s outfit, entered the bank before him,” Lady said. “As the guard entered the building, the suspect turned and grabbed for the bag.

“While they struggled over the money, a second suspect, also dressed as a nurse, attacked the guard from behind,” the lieutenant said. “The one behind him shot the guard twice, grabbed the bag, and both suspects ran north on Fairfax.”
