TUSTIN : Council Limits Use of Revamped Chambers
To protect newly installed state-of-the-art equipment, only government meetings will be allowed in the City Council chambers when the refurbished Civic Center opens Aug. 30.
The council decided this week to limit use of its chambers to protect sound and video equipment from theft, accidental damage and vandalism.
The decision will mean a loss of about $1,000 a year in rental fees, but officials said the cost of repairs to the equipment could exceed the rental income.
In the past, residents, businesses, churches and nonprofit groups could use the council chambers for seminars, meetings, church services and classes.
City Hall operations will return to the Civic Center, at 300 Centennial Way, on Aug. 30, after a 27-month renovation project that cost $11.3 million.
The money came from a bond sale by the Tustin Community Redevelopment Agency and $2 million in developer fees from east Tustin developments.
