THE WORD ON WHAT’S HIP AND WHAT’S HYPE

Fall Guy

Fashionable dudes feeling left out of the ‘70s trend need sulk no more. Stray Cat in Fullerton has dozens of original bell-bottoms--never worn and still bearing the original tags ($28). “We specialize in ‘dead stock,’ ” says owner Anna Evans. “Stuff found in an old warehouse somewhere.” What’s more, the vintage tweed slacks, in red, green, brown and blue, are very hip this fall. Evans also notes the two-tone styling. “It’s that ‘Partridge Family-Brady Bunch’ look that’s so hot in nightclubs now.” Sizes are available for her, too.

Advice That’s Real

So you’ve nipped and tucked and peeled and now you’re ready to unveil your new bod at the beach. Not so fast. Those who have recently had liposuction, face lifts, even birthmark removal must exercise caution their first summer in the sun, advises Dr. Bruce Achauer. The Orange-based plastic surgeon suggests covering scars and using liberal amounts of a high SPF sun block on surrounding areas. “Although the scars are small, exposure to the sun will affect the healing process and possibly leave scars more noticeable,” he says.

World Beat Babies

Looking for ways to separate your baby’s wardrobe from the rest? Stop by Nana Banana, a kiosk in the Brea Mall, which sells colorful handmade goods from Guatemala. For $10, pick up a brightly colored sun hat. It’s cotton and machine washable. “Some adults like it so much they make the mistake it’s for them,” says saleswoman Sandra Lim. A closer look and bigger heads can find a stack nearby of similar hats that fit for about $12. Check out other items, from diaper bags to primitive toys.

Bandannarama

Worn wrapped around the head and knotted in the back like a pirate, a bandanna can look cool this season while providing protection from the blazing sun. And consider its other uses: rolled tightly as a choker or headband or folded into a Western-style foulard. Home-ec majors can sew two or more into a skirt.
