From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Prominent San Francisco defense attorney Patrick Hallinan has been arrested for investigation of alleged marijuana smuggling and money laundering, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Sunday.

Hallinan, 59, the brother of San Francisco Supervisor Terence Hallinan, was arrested Friday at his Marin County home, the newspaper said. A former colleague told the newspaper that the charges, filed under seal in Reno, apparently include obstruction of justice and conspiracy in connection with alleged smuggling and money laundering in the 1980s.

A spokesman for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration confirmed the arrest, but provided no details. Hallinan was in custody Sunday in an Oakland jail, an Alameda County sheriff’s deputy said. Hallinan is scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate today.

His father, the late Vincent Hallinan, was the attorney who defended labor leader Harry Bridges against charges of being a Communist.

Patrick Hallinan was the lawyer for former state Superintendent of Schools Bill Honig, who was convicted of illegally using his office to help his wife’s consulting business.
