Wanted: “The Fugitive” for running away with the weekend’s box-office thunder. The opening-weekend gross of $23.8 million was not only the biggest ever for an August weekend but it was one of the year’s biggest openings, period.

* “The Wedding Banquet,” a comedic look at modern values versus Old World traditions, had a feast in its first weekend at seven theaters.
