BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Lasorda Is Impressed by Mondesi

After a brief look at Raul Mondesi, the young outfielder who was sent back down to Albuquerque, Dodger Manager Tom Lasorda said he was impressed and eager to see more of him in September.

Mondesi, mentioned as a possible center field replacement for 1994 free agent Brett Butler, was called up to fill a roster spot when third baseman Tim Wallach went on the disabled list and was sent down when Wallach was activated Monday.

Mondesi appeared in 12 games and got five hits--four singles and a home run--in 29 at-bats. He started seven games in right field and one in left.

“I played him as much as I could, but not as much as I wanted to,” Lasorda said.

“I wish he could’ve stayed up here, because we were working with him and getting a lot done with him. But we didn’t have the room. He’ll be up here again soon.

“Mondesi is a very talented young man. He can run, he can hit, he can hit with power, he can field and he can throw. He has the potential to be a five-point player, like Eric Davis used to be . . . and could be. “

The Dodgers acquired Seattle Mariner right-hander Bob Ayrault off waivers and assigned him to Albuquerque.

Ayrault was 1-1 with a 3.20 earned-run average in 14 games with the Mariners after beginning the season with the Philadelphia Phillies, with whom he was 2-0 with a 9.58 ERA.

Wallach, who sat out 20 games because of a broken rib suffered when he was hit by a pitch from Montreal’s Ken Hill, started at third base Monday. He had not been on the disabled list previously in his 14 major league seasons.

In his absence, the Dodgers went 9-11.
