Malpractice lawyer Bruce Fagel of Beverly Hills said he advised representatives of Reggie Lewis’ family that they should not file a lawsuit in connection with the death of the Boston Celtic star.

Fagel, who represented the family of the late Hank Gathers in litigation stemming from the death of the Loyola Marymount star in 1990, said a lawsuit in the Lewis matter would open difficult and potentially painful issues and wouldn’t be justified by the family’s financial situation.

When Lewis died after collapsing at Brandeis University on July 27, he had three years left on a guaranteed five-year, $16.5-million contract. The Celtics have said they will honor the contract.

Rutgers quarterback Bryan Fortay charges in a lawsuit that his old school, the University of Miami, hurt his chances for a professional career by not making him the starting quarterback.

Miami failed to keep a promise to make Fortay the starter and also failed to supervise an academic adviser who involved Fortay and teammates in a Pell Grant scandal, according to the lawsuit, filed last week in U.S. District Court in Newark, N.J. Fortay is seeking $10 million.
