Leadership

* Regarding leadership, in his Column Right (July 22), James Pinkerton suggests that President Clinton would have shown leadership skill had he appointed Sen. Sam Nunn to be secretary of state in order to keep him quiet on the issue of removing the ban on gays in the military.

I would like to suggest that our President indeed showed true leadership by putting the American people first and appointing as secretary of state Warren Christopher, who has the knowledge and the skills to represent us in negotiations with the world’s leaders, rather than appointing someone just to politically remove them as a roadblock.

Real leadership is actually the awareness of the important issues for the ordinary citizen and the focused, courageous movement forward on those issues. So far, this citizen gives President Clinton an A for leadership.
