Harry Bellaver; Stage, Film and TV Character Actor

Harry Bellaver, 88, character actor who portrayed Sgt. Arcaro on the popular 1960 television series “Naked City.” Born in Hillsboro, Ill., Bellaver dropped out of school in the sixth grade and worked as a Teamster, a farmhand and a coal miner before winning a scholarship to Brookwood Labor College in Katonah, N.Y. He got into acting by taking roles in school plays and trained in repertory theaters in Philadelphia and New York. He is remembered for his Broadway roles as Chief Sitting Bull in “Annie Get Your Gun,” and as the coach in “That Championship Season.” Bellaver helped to found Actors’ Equity. He made his first film, “Another Thin Man,” in 1939 and had notable roles in such films as “From Here to Eternity” and “The Old Man and the Sea.” In addition to “Naked City,” he appeared for five years as Ernie Downs on the soap opera “Another World.” On Sunday in Nyack, N.Y., of pneumonia.
