Santa Monica : Weekend Parking to Cost $2

Share

The Santa Monica City Council on Tuesday voted to charge for nighttime weekend parking in the city-owned shopping center parking lots at Santa Monica Place.

Starting next month, it will cost $2 to park in the lots after 6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. The lots, which are adjacent to the Third Street Promenade, are used by 2,500 cars each weekend night, according to a survey conducted by the shopping center. The bulk of the cars belong to Promenade visitors.

Under a prior agreement with the city, parking for up to three hours was free in the Santa Monica Place lots. After 1987, when the city put meters in its other downtown lots, visitors flocked to the Santa Monica Place lots for the free parking.

According to a city staff report, the new parking fee will bring in $300,000 annually. Two-thirds of the revenue will go to the city redevelopment agency, and the rest will go directly to the city’s general fund because of the new city parking tax.

The lots were financed by city-issued bonds and subleased to the shopping center, which will operate the attendant parking system.
