GLENDALE : Foundation Donates $13,000 to Groups
The Glendale Community Foundation has donated nearly $13,000 to the city’s Brand Library and local chapters of the American Red Cross, Goodwill Industries of Southern California and the Boy Scouts.
“Our goals are to aid the existing charities in our area,” said Tom Miller, executive director of the foundation.
Miller said the foundation gives grants to various organizations every two months.
This month, Goodwill Industries of Southern California received the most funding--$4,627--for a new electronic cash register at Goodwill’s discount store in Glendale.
The Verdugo Hills Boy Scouts Council was given $4,060. That money will go toward an improved water-cleaning system and a new office postage machine, Scout officials said.
A $3,373 award went to the Glendale-Crescenta Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross for purchase of disaster relief supplies and equipment, including cots and blankets.
The final grant was given to the city’s Brand Library, which will spend $865 to buy four volumes of the “New Grove Dictionary of Opera” and two volumes of Verdi’s “Il Trovatore.”
Miller said the 37-year-old foundation has donated $1 million to nearly 100 different nonprofit groups. Various businesses and donors give money to the foundation, which in turn invests funds in bonds and certificates of deposits.
“We invest the money and we use the earnings to make the grants,” he said.
