Quake Swarm Jolts Mammoth Lakes
A swarm of earthquakes that started Monday night continued Thursday near Mammoth Lakes, with about 400 events recorded so far over the four-day period, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. Most of the quakes were in the 1 and 2 magnitude range; the strongest temblor in the series was a magnitude 4.5.
Geological Survey seismologist Steve Walter said the quake swarm is centered in a mountainous area 10 miles southeast of Mammoth Lakes and is the strongest seismic activity in the Mammoth area in the past two years. No damage or injuries have been reported.
