Boo-ray for Hollywood

I looked forward to going to the Bowl for the Great American Concert (“Grey’s Mixed Results From America’s Past at Bowl,” Aug. 9.) Leaving Orange County at 5:45 p.m. seemed a small price to pay for the joy I expected.

Surely someplace at the Bowl you should be able to purchase food at a fair price. Two sandwiches with two soft drinks came to $19.

As soon as the concert began, an infant close by started crying and continued through most of the evening. No one came to admonish this, nor to lead the parents and infant away.

John Mauceri is delightful, but the evening was completely ruined by the appearance of Joel Grey. I was flabbergasted when he strolled on stage to do his renditions of Jimmy Durante, Eddie Cantor and Al Jolson. Most of the audience didn’t even know who these people were that he so poorly imitated.

After battling cars leaving the Bowl, I wondered why no traffic police were hired to direct the thousands of cars. There was almost an hour delay in exiting. When I arrived home after 1 a.m., I concluded that the only worthwhile event was the magnificent fireworks. If only they had come at the start; no one would have had to stay for a third-rate production.
