Inhospitable Council

I attended the Thousand Oaks City Council meeting July 28 to present my opinion during a discussion of the pros and cons of banning smoking in public places. I, along with a few other die-hard souls, waited until 2 a.m., when Mayor Lazar took mercy on us and advanced the issue on the agenda.

Before calling our names, the council requested that we please not take much time presenting our views because of the lateness of the hour. There were only five people who remained to speak for a tobacco ban. It would have been more hospitable--and taken only 15 minutes or so in total--for the council to simply hear each of us without making us feel like out-of-town guests who are overstaying their welcome.

The council must realize that people care enough about this community to give up a comfortable evening at home and hang in there for the opportunity to present their views. I say this not just for this situation, but for all occasions when there are many issues to discuss.

When the subject of a tobacco ban comes before the City Council again for public discussion and a vote, obviously it would be best for everyone if it is scheduled early in the agenda.
