LONG BEACH : Spill From Sewer Line Closes 4 Miles of Beaches

Share

A sewage spill caused Long Beach officials to close about four miles of beaches Friday and order the cancellation of ocean races and sand castle-building events today and Sunday in the city’s annual Sea Festival, authorities said.

The spill from a blocked sewer line sent 35,000 gallons of raw sewage into the ocean from the Los Angeles River on Friday morning, said Dick Miller, the city’s manager of beaches and marinas. Health officials closed beaches from the Shoreline Village complex near the Queen Mary to the city’s south border, Miller said.

Beaches were expected to remain closed through the weekend, pending the results of coliform bacteria tests, he said. All Sea Festival events involving contact with ocean water near the spill were canceled, Miller said.

However, the beach closures did not extend to protected areas such as Alamitos Bay, the Long Beach Marine Stadium and the Colorado Lagoon, he added. Boating marinas also remained open.
