LOCAL NOTES : Tustin Teams Win Two Titles in Water Polo

SoCal Water Polo, a club based in Tustin, won two age-division titles Saturday at the National Junior Olympics at De Anza College in Cupertino.

The 15-and-under team beat Triton of San Clemente, 11-4, with the help of two goals and four assists from Brian Brown. Ian Ching and Adam Wright had three goals each for SoCal.

The 13-and-under team beat SET, a team from Saddleback and El Toro, 11-4. Robby Arroyo had six goals.

Stanford beat SoCal’s 17-and-under team, 8-6, in the other title game.

Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza and Alicia Allison of Santa Ana each shot 73 and are tied for first after the first of four rounds at the Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic.

The tournament is being played at the Chanal Country Club in Little Rock, Ark.

Chris Barry of Placentia shot a 73 and is four shots off the lead in the boys’ division. Jin Park of Fullerton shot a 76.

Fountain Valley finished round-robin play with a 7-0 victory over Hawaii Maui Saturday in the Colt World Series in Lafayette, Ind.

Luke Hudson pitched six innings and Jason Williams the seventh for Fountain Valley. Deric Yanagisana had an RBI single for Fountain Valley, which plays in Monday’s semifinal round.

Former University High star Greg Whiteley, competing with severe tendinitis in his shin, failed to qualify for the final in the men’s 5,000 meters at the World Track and Field Championships at Stuttgart, Germany.

Whiteley, who ran a career best 13 minutes 24.55 seconds in June, finished in 14:11.48 Saturday, 30 seconds slower than the last qualifier.

Jennifer Grabel of Cypress won the women’s black/red lightweight title in kyoroogi during the tae-kwondo competition at the California Games in Ontario.

Other female kyoroogi winners from Orange County were Nadine Alliman (Stanton) and Lisa Amsell (La Habra). Male winners included Brandon Burnham (Garden Grove), Boris Chung (Anaheim), Arthur Hernandez (Anaheim), B.J. Mendoza (Buena Park), Brian Nguyen (Cypress), Daniel Penland (Buena Park), Oman Rios (Santa Ana), Billy Rabello (Stanton), Steve Rhee (Placentia), Rosalino Romero (Santa Ana), Stephen Swagerty (Fullerton) and Joseph Tongko (Placentia).

Orange County winners in poomse were Ramon Gofigan (Stanton) and Ronnie Belczyk (Laguna Niguel).
