The procedure for evaluating UCLA’s quarterbacks emerged quickly on the first day of twice daily practice sessions, and there’s nothing complicated about it.

“We’re letting a guy stay up until he screws up,” Coach Terry Donahue said.

The position is being contested between junior Wayne Cook and sophomores Rob Walker and Ryan Fien, with the promise that each will get an equal chance over the next two weeks to be the starter.

The process “will even up,” Donahue said. “If a guy gets a hot day, he’ll stay up a little bit; and if he’s off, he’ll put a little pressure on himself to come back because he’s not getting his (repetitions).”

The quarterbacks’ styles also quickly emerged, Cook throwing several completions on out patterns of about 10-15 yards; Walker--an option quarterback in high school in Austin, Tex.--throwing well on the move and Fien throwing the deep ball well. Fien completed long passes to Bryan Adams, who is returning for his junior season after sitting out all last year because of an ankle injury, and J.J. Stokes, who outleaped two defenders to catch a 40-yard pass.

The announcement of the winner of the competition will be made the week before the season opener against California, Sept. 4 at the Rose Bowl.
