Loggins Brings ‘60s Out of Hibernation

Kenny Loggins’ Universal Amphitheatre performance Saturday was a celebration of ‘60s revivalism. Although much of the material of the superb two-hour set was actually released in subsequent decades, the spirit and the energy of ‘60s and ‘70s middle-of-the-road pop permeated the program.

The amiable Loggins, whose high falsetto and warm middle timbre sounded better than ever, leaned heavily on such familiar items as “This Is It,” “Your Mama Don’t Dance” and “The Real Thing,” but also added a song from his soundtrack for the Emmy Award-winning TV show, “This Island Earth,” and a reworking of the classic Loggins & Messina hit, “House at Pooh Corner.”

The result was an evening from Loggins and a solid eight-piece band that powerfully demonstrated the persistent energies of ‘60s rock. “Where did the dream of the ‘60s go?” asked Loggins, just before digging into “Conviction of the Heart.” In a call to Boomers everywhere, he answered his own question: “It was just in hibernation for a while. But now we’ve got some power and we’re gonna kick some butt!”

Loggins also appears at the Pacific Amphitheatre on Wednesday.
