FOUNTAIN VALLEY : Brookhurst Repaving Nearly Completed

Share

There’s good news for motorists who use the stretch of Brookhurst Street between Talbert and Garfield avenues: The repaving of the roadway should be completed by Wednesday, a city official said Monday.

However, it will probably take another two weeks to put the finishing touches on the project, such as striping the lanes, said Wayne S. Osborne, director of public works.

Osborne said that over the last two months, the city has received at least 50 calls from residents complaining that the project is taking too long.

The resurfacing of the street started May 1 and was to be completed by July 13, Osborne said.

The city has also received 20 claims from motorists, ranging from $100 to $300, for damages to their cars, Osborne said. Their claims will be turned over to the contractor, who is required to have insurance, he said.

Osborne said the delay in placing the final layer of asphalt on the road has been “very inconvenient.”

Osborne said the contractor, Silvia Construction Inc. of Upland, ran into some problems in pouring the final layer of pavement--a mix of asphalt and rubber. Officials with the firm could not be reached for comment.

Osborne said the contractor must pay the city $550 a day in damages for not finishing the job on time.
