BOYLE HEIGHTS : Redevelopment Study of 2 Eastside Areas Planned
The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday unanimously approved a redevelopment study of Boyle Heights and parts of El Sereno in an effort to spur economic growth on the city’s Eastside.
The study, sought by Councilman Richard Alatorre, was recommended by groups involved in Adelante Eastside, a study that found Boyle Heights and El Sereno have some of the oldest housing tracts in the city, suffer from overcrowding and lack sufficient open land for new housing or business development.
The study, which will take about two years, will target commercial areas along Brooklyn Avenue, 1st, 3rd and Soto streets, and Whittier Boulevard. Industrial areas on Valley Boulevard in El Sereno along the Los Angeles River will also be studied.
Residential neighborhoods will not be targeted for redevelopment, Alatorre said. But the Adelante Eastside group recommended expansion of the Community Redevelopment Agency’s residential rehabilitation loan program.
