Lewis Is First Black to Head Major Public Broadcasting Group

Call Me: A telephone company executive has been named president of National Public Radio. Delano E. Lewis, 54, will become the first black to head a major public broadcasting organization.

Lewis has been president of Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. of Washington since 1988. He succeeds Douglas Bennett, who resigned in May to become assistant secretary of state for international organizations.

Leonard A. Wohl has joined Polygram Holding Inc.’s legal division. He will be responsible for drafting and negotiating recording, publishing, licensing, merchandising and video agreements for the entertainment conglomerate’s unit. Wohl will also supervise litigation.

Shelly Bunge is the new director of music business affairs for Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Susan Parker has been named executive vice president of financial budgeting for Warner Bros.

Carolyn Broner has been named vice president of Parker Public Relations. The company, run by Charlotte and Joel Parker, counts Arnold Schwarzenegger among its clients.

Frank Kelly will continue to oversee reality programming for network and first-run TV at Paramount Pictures’ television group, following the appointment of Garrett S. Hart as president of Paramount’s network TV division.

Bruce Charet is the new vice president of creative affairs at Bud Grant Productions.

Thomas E. Dooley is the new president of interactive television at Viacom International Inc. He is joined there by two other new executives: Robert Meyers and Peter Miller.

Alan Fels has joined Savoy Pictures as senior vice president and controller.

Mary Briere has been named vice president of post-production for ancillary markets within Columbia Tristar’s joint services group.

John Degan is the new manager of operations at St. Paul, Minn.-based United States Satellite Broadcasting.
