Track Follower Wants Credit Where It’s Due

Randy Harvey wrote that Mark Plaatjes’ victory in the marathon at the World Track and Field Championships was the first by an American in the Olympics or World Championships since Frank Shorter in the Munich Olympics in 1972.

I realize that women are still fighting for equality in this country, but I certainly hope that Joan Benoit Samuelson, 1984 Olympic marathon champion (at the Los Angeles Games, no less), has earned the right to be called an American.

The track and field World Championships are taking place all week long. They can probably be watched in any other TV household across the world, live or at least delayed. I’m checking my TV listings and I see a lot of jet skiing, body surfing, water skiing, horse racing, monster-trucking, kung fu fighting, American gladiatoring and whatever-ing you can imagine. But track and field? I don’t see any.

Why?
