STANTON : City to Celebrate New Civic Center
The city will hold a celebration at the new Civic Center on Wednesday and provide tours of the $5-million facility.
The city began operating July 26 in the new building at 7800 Katella Ave., across Cedar Street from the public library. The building and adjoining parking garage were paid for with redevelopment money.
Some residents protested the Civic Center when it was first planned in early 1990. A recall campaign was started against Councilman Sal Sapien in 1991 because of his strong support for the project. Many residents said the money could have been better spent on helping small businesses grow.
The City Council now meets in the building on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month.
Mary Gonye, recreation and leisure services director, said the city will start the dedication ceremony at 5:30 p.m. with speeches and entertainment.
City Clerk Darleen Cordova said there will be a mariachi band and a cake in the shape of the new building, large enough to serve 500 people, she said.
The cake will be made by stacking five sheet cakes and then carving them into the right shape, she said.
Representatives from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and Fire Department will be on hand, Cordova said. The two county departments provide police and fire services to Stanton.
