BOTTLE ILLEGAL: Prosecution and defense alike tried to dot all the i’s and cross the t’s as Jessie (Speedy) Gonzalez entered Valley legal history. They expect their work to be scrutinized by appellate judges, maybe lots of them. Gonzalez was convicted of violating an unusual court order forbidding harmless-sounding conduct, the city’s chief weapon against the Blythe Street gang (B6). . . . His offense: possession of a pager and a glass bottle.

HOUSE DIVIDED: That CSUN fraternity’s apology for a “rape, pillage and burn” party invitation is dividing members. While Lambda Chi Alpha’s president was announcing plans to work with NOW on sexual harassment seminars (B4), a member complained that “my fraternity brothers . . . are putting their beliefs on the back burner for the sake of political correctness.”

JAVA DIVE: Coffeehouses? Funky poet hangouts? You have to go to the Village or SoHo for those, no? No. The Valley, a coffeehouse desert only a few years ago, now has at least 10. Above, a reading at the Iguana in North Hollywood (NoHo to boosters). See Valley Briefing, Page B5

FIEDLER WINS: This round goes to Bobbi Fiedler in a long political grudge match with Rita Walters. With Walters protesting strongly and casting the lone “nay” vote, the L. A. City Council appointed Fiedler, a former Valley congresswoman, to the Community Redevelopment Agency (B1). . . . Their enmity goes back to the school busing bitterness of 20 years ago, when Fiedler was a Valley anti-busing leader and Walters an integration advocate.

VALLEY NORTH: Former Palmdale High standout Jim Nevelle, co-captain of the Washington Huskies football team, is shocked that Coach Don James resigned after the Pac-10 Conference penalized the program (C8). . . . Many teammates have Valley ties. Crescenta Valley, Notre Dame, Chaminade, Sylmar and Harvard-Westlake alumni are Huskies.
