With the help of the senior citizens and teen-agers who poured into the Ventura County Fair early this week, total attendance for the event is edging closer to last year’s levels.

About 19,000 people 55 years and older took advantage of a free admission offer at the fair Tuesday, fair spokeswoman Teri Raley said.

“It was unbelievable,” Raley said. “It certainly feels like the biggest Senior Day we’ve ever had.”

And another 7,500 people, mostly youths, crowded into the fair Tuesday evening for a grandstand performance by the band Shai, Raley said.

Overall, Tuesday’s attendance was 27,090, which is about 8,300 more than came to the fair on Senior Day last year.

Total attendance for the fair has been lagging compared to 1992.

But Tuesday’s big turnout boosted the total number of fair visitors this year to 147,169.

That’s only 3,091 fewer than at the same time last year.

“I’m very, very pleased with attendance,” Raley said.
