Rancho Park : Suit Filed Over Oil Pollution
The Los Angeles city attorney has filed pollution charges against an oil company accused of fouling the Rancho Park golf course and a nearby residential neighborhood during a rainstorm in February.
The mixture of oil and water overflowed from two crude-oil cellars designed to catch leaking oil and water from pipeline pumps, City Atty. James K. Hahn said.
The mixture flowed onto three to five acres of the golf course and also oozed onto three residential blocks, he said. He said some of it almost certainly reached the ocean through the city storm drain system.
An employee of the Hillcrest Beverly Oil Corp. failed to call for a pump truck to clear the oil and water from the cellars before they overflowed, according to Deputy City Atty. Don Kass. The employee was fired, he said.
Company representatives were not available for comment.
Hillcrest Beverly is scheduled for arraignment in Los Angeles Municipal Court on Sept. 20.
